Are you a Millennial (born between 1980 and 1995) or Gen Z (born between 1995 and 2010)? There is a good chance that you are a member of a gym! A new research by Les Mills shows that a generation shift is taking place in the gyms: older members leave, and 80 percent of all current members is nowadays born between 1980 and 2010. The fact that more and more younger members find their way to the gym also means that gyms have to fulfill different expectations and wishes.
Les Mills asked more than 12 thousand people in 22 countries how and where they prefer to train. Younger generations in particular expect a gym to integrate the latest technologies into their training. Virtual classes – mac SportsClub offers them too – are a good example. 65 percent of the participants in virtual classes are Millennial or Gen Z. At mac, that number is even slightly higher.
Often in the gym
Going to the gym is not obvious for everyone. But when people do work out in a gym, 84 percent of them go there three times a week or even more. Gen Z even go above average. Almost nine out of ten train at least three times a week, Millennials follow them closely. In addition, they indicate that a healthy lifestyle is very important. Both groups also really enjoy training hard and consider doing sports as a social activity.
Inspiration and motivation
Millennials and Gen Z’ers really want to enjoy doing sports. Instructors play a significate role in that thought. If the people in the gym feel inspired and motivated by the instructors, they regularly return to the group classes. More than a third of the Millennials and Gen Z’ers find the quality of the instructor even decisive for attending a class.
